The charity was founded in 1959 by Norma Skemp (please see 'Our Founder' for more details on the creation of the charity).
Listening Books now has a membership of approximately 4000 people and we support individuals with a wide variety of print impairments. These include Arthritis, ME, Stroke, MS, Visual Impairment, Cerebral Palsy and Special Educational Needs including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia or Autism.
Our service is delivered to our member's homes, as well as organisations such as schools and care centres. We know from the many letters, telephone calls and emails we receive that many members consider the service a vital part of their lives.
"I joined Listening Books because I am dyslexic and when I read a long book it would take me ages to finish it which would put me off reading altogether. When I joined Listening Books I became more interested in books because I realised that they could be exciting. Listening Books has really improved my vocabulary and my ability to write stories in school. As well as listening to the book tapes I read a lot now and my reading age has really improved. Listening Books made me realise that books were not my enemy!" |

We stock over 4000 titles in our library on either MP3 CD or cassette tape. We also offer educational titles to members on-line through streaming on our dedicated education website www.soundlearning.org.uk If you would like to listen to a sample of the internet streaming please click here.
When deciding on which audiobooks to add to our library, the preferences of our members are most important. We add over 300 titles a year and a list of these are sent out to our members in the Summer and the Winter when they will also recieve our newsletter Connect. If you would like to listen to past Connects, please go to news/info.
Our service simply could not exist without the cooperation and generosity of publishers, authors, volunteers and many other supporters of the charity's work. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them.
