Laura Carlin interview: The Wicked Cometh

March 18, 2019 1 Comment

Laura Carlin is the bestselling author of The Wicked Cometh, a dark and mysterious tale set against the backdrop of the slums of Georgian London.

This is Laura's debut novel, and it earned her a nomination for the Books Are My Bag Breakthrough Author Award in 2018.

Abigail Jaggers spoke with Laura about the historical setting of The Wicked Cometh, what inspired her to write the story and about her excitement of choosing a narrator for the audio version!

Can you tell us why you set The Wicked Cometh in this time period?

It's always fascinated me…

Did you want to include some darker themes in the novel?

It did become a little bit darker…

Were you inspired by real events?

I'm always looking out for little pockets of history to explore.

Did you have to do a lot of research into the language of the time?

The dialogue for the characters is important.

What other writers inspire you?

Reading Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters was a game changer.

Why did you choose ‘The Wicked Cometh' for the title?

There's a little bit of wickedness within all the characters.

Did you have the idea for the romance when you first started writing the book?

It's a little bit autobiographical…

Did you enjoy Sophie Ward narrating the audiobook?

What an absolute treat that was!

What are you working on at the moment?

It's set in a completely different time period […] I'm do feel really excited about the next one…

Thank you to Laura Carlin for speaking with us and for such an interesting interview! If you would like to find out more about The Wicked Cometh or about Laura, you can visit her page on the Hodder and Stoughton website.
