Over the border in Wales, DC Ffion Morgan recovers the body of an estate agent from the lake. The best in the series
Other People’s Houses is the third book in the DC Ffion Morgan series, written by Claire Mackintosh, set in picturesque North Wales.
The book starts with a fairly tame crime initially. A local well healed area known as “The Hill” has had a spate of break ins, but bizarrely, some high value items have not been taken. Meanwhile, a true crime podcast, featuring an unsolved ten year old case is capturing the nation’s imagination. Even Ffion’s interest has been piqued. Very quickly, the teams on both sides on the Welsh/English border have more serious cases to investigate.
One of the reasons why I enjoy a good series, is because I feel at home with the characters. It is easy to get bedded in to the story, to feel comfortable, and enjoy whatever the author has planned for me; without having a huge new cast to remember. I thoroughly enjoyed the developments in the central characters’ backstories, though one story strand had me infuriated, muttering to myself quite frequently.
Like all good crime fiction, I had no idea of “whodunnit”, I mistrusted virtually everyone, and changed my mind frequently.
From the author’s newsletter, I know she has been working hard at learning Welsh, which shows in the increased use of the language, in the character dialogue. Other People’s Houses is my favourite of, what is currently, the three book series. There is plenty of scope to explore these characters further, so I really hope that Claire has, at least, another book planned for us.
