Covid-19 Update

We are aware that this is a very worrying time for members and we are delighted to report that we have maintained our full downloads and streaming services which are accessible 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. We have now also resumed a limited CD service for current members who use CDs.

Members who only access our CD service are still able to take advantage of a free upgrade to our online service during this time.

We are delighted to say we are now able to safely operate a reduced service for our members who borrow our MP3 CDs, and have begun to send out more books. Our delivery rate will be much slower than usual - please do bear with us as we try and send out as many CDs as we can!

If you have CDs you have been keeping aside you can now send them back to us if it's convenient and safe to do so. If you'd rather not go out to post them at the moment, it's absolutely fine for you to keep them until you are ready to send them back. If you would like some more books, contact us on 020 7407 9417 or at

21st April 2020

Our online services continue to run 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and although our offices are closed, you can still contact staff via email and telephone as normal. If you are a member who usually accesses our CD service, we are offering you a free upgrade to our download and streaming service for the duration of the lockdown period. If you need any help to use this service, please contact us on 020 7407 9417 or at

If you are unable to use the online service and have not yet spoken with a member of the team, please do get in touch on 020 7407 9417 or at

COVID-19 update for our CD users

We regret to say that we have taken the difficult decision to suspend our postal CD service from today. Over the weekend it was announced that only staff who had a critical job in relation to COVID-19 response should continue to use public transport to get to work. Our offices are in central London and our staff all use the public transport system, so to reduce risk to them and the greater population we will no longer be going into the office.

We understand the devastating effect this will have on some of our members. We are offering all those members on our CD service a temporary transfer to our online audiobooks, and a Listening Books member of staff to stay on the phone with you to talk you through set up. We are also exploring other ways to try and get audiobooks out to you.

We know this is a lonely time and books will be needed more than ever. We will be calling all members who have used our CD service this year and who don’t already use our online service as well, to see if we can get you online. We will still be picking up phone messages and emails, and staff will still be working 9am-5pm, just not in the office. Below are a list of numbers if you need to speak to anyone during these difficult times.

  • Age UK Advice Line: 0800 678 1602
  • Age UK (Scotland): 0800 12 44 222
  • Silver Line (free 24 hour confidential helpline for older people): 0800 470 80 90
  • Samaritans: 116 123
  • The Salvation Army: 020 7367 4500
  • Mind Infoline: 0300 123 3393

Stay safe and best wishes,

The Listening Books Team

Listening Books CD Service Update

Title image for CD service update

We know that during this worrying time, many of our members may be considering self-isolating or may need to do so in the future.

We are monitoring the situation continuously and would like to offer any members on our CD service the chance to increase the numbers of CDs they receive. If you think this may help you then please contact us so we can get these out to you as soon as we can!

If you are currently self-isolating and cannot get to a postbox to return what CDs you currently have then please get in touch and let us know.

In addition, we would like to offer help to all members so they can use our online library service and so not be out of audiobooks in the unlikely event of further disruptions to our CD postal service. If you would like help with this then get in touch.

We know these are difficult, anxious times but all of us at Listening Books know that being able to access stories is vital - it's why we provide our service! Books will help us get through this and help us remain in touch with a broader world while we all change our lives to adapt for the time being.

We will continue to monitor Government and Public Health advice and to do our absolute best to ensure service is not disrupted. If you have any concerns, questions or suggestions please email or call 020 7407 9417.

Chair of Listening Books Gillian Howarth on the sad passing of Listening Books President Baroness Warnock

As Chair of Listening Books I speak on behalf of my fellow trustees, our staff and all our many members in mourning the death of Baroness Warnock, our President of over twenty years. Her long and distinguished career as a philosopher, teacher and ethical thinker was a source of inspiration far beyond the academic and medical spheres she was particularly associated with. Both her hugely influential report on human fertilisation, and her championing of children with special educational needs being included in mainstream education, showed her wisdom and deep humanity. Her backing of Listening Books was a source of great pride for us. It was entirely consistent with her outlook on inclusion that she wished books to be available in a format that would give them the widest currency; she believed passionately in the accessibility of books as a human right. We will miss her sorely.
