This original and refreshingly different dramatisation follows Dante, 'lost in a dark wood', who is met by Virgil, who takes him on a tour of the underworld: a place he could end up if he decides to take his own life. Starring Corin Redgrave as Dante, Alex Jennings as Virgil, Laurie Anderson as Beatrice and Arthur Brown as The Gate of Hell and produced by the highly-skilled BBC producer, Roger Elsgood. Dante passes through the gate of hell, on which is inscribed the famous phrase "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate", or "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here". He and his guide then see a succession of damned and 'lost souls' who flounder in an array of terrible torments, and Dante begins to realise that life may not be such a bad deal after all...
